On Intrepid, when I hibernate my system, the screen goes black, I sometimes see some kernel messages, and the process can last around 20-30 seconds.
I wish there was a progess bar (like usplash)...

Visual feedback for clic on Eject button

When the user clics on the Eject button for removable media in Nautilus, there is no visual feedback.
There should be :
- aspect change when pushed (like any GUI button)
- aspect change on mouse over (facultative)
- aspect change while busy
Those details would prevent an impatient user to clic several times, and to make sure his action was taken in account...

Brainstorm: Go to login page if you vote when not logged in

I use public computers form time to time, so I am not always logged in to Brainstorm when I visit the site. However, I often forget that I'm not logged in and go ahead and read and click to vote on an idea. The page reloads, with a little banner that tells me that I need to log in. It would be simpler and save time to simply redirect to the login/signup page.

Hi, I think that Ubuntu developers need to try and optimize the performance of the desktop in general other than making ubuntu faster to startup and shutdown.
If it is possible of course, I guess something more custom could be done with the kernel for speed.
One very important thing is that.. For some reason, I can't feel all of my 4 cores really working for performance, the system works as if I have like 1 core at a faster clock rate,
but that's about it.
Anyway, just my thought, the desktop should be more responsive, apps should open up faster (I've tried an iMac before, if you know what I'm talking about...)
One last thing, just as a sidenote: Is everyone thinking that nVidia actually Fixed the performance problems they have? Because I think that if they did, only little... And yeah, that's a major source of performance problem for the desktop, so... gotta talk to them nVidia devs to figure out what they do wrong.

Support for Thinkad ultrabay batteries

Currently if you wish to have ultrabay battery visible in gnome-power-manager you must boot your laptop with this battery plugged in. That's because ACPI probes batteries only on early boot. This battery is only visible through tpsmapi, which is not supported in gpm.
Second issue is there is no way to automatically prevent the battery from full discharge, which shortens it's lifespan dramatically. Gnome-power-manager lets the battery to fully discharge and then switches for secondary(primary) battery. There should be way to define minimal charge threshold for all batteries.

Configure what applications uses Guest user

In many situations, guest user should not have permissions of use of many applications.
For example, while using the PC as public terminal and we only want people use some application like Firefox. Also, we want people visit only some web-pages.
Guest user has not got to use any non-public software in the system, its permissions have to be configurated by local user.

Time Remaining For Full Battery Dis/Charge

I'm using Ubuntu on a laptop and in the upper right corner there is the Gnome Power Manager. It shows an icon of the battery when discharging or a cord with the battery when charging.
I would like it to simply show next to a time estimate it has for the time remaining for a full discharge or charge. Don't get mad at me for saying this, but I have seen this feature on Mac OSX.
Let me know what you guys think.

try to open synaptic, then type in konsole:
sudo apt-get install mc
what you get?
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?
i think it should be like in fedora10 -
"waiting for dpkg"
"waiting for dpkg"

Include last updated time in Update Manager

Title says is all. Provide time last updated in update manager, dropdown dock icon, synaptic. and apt-get and aptitude should be more verbose with this too
ex:
$ apt-get status last updated on hh:MM:ss (we recommend you update)
$ apt-get update
> Last updated hh:mm:ss ago are you sure (y/N)
You could expand the usability with a popup asking since you've updated already in the last hh:mm:ss you might want to reconsider until later. this can be implemented into apt-get aptitude update-manager synaptic.

More Cowbell! (erm, I mean right-click context menus!)

Hi There,
I love context menus, love em, and I wish Ubuntu (well Gnome) loved them more too! It's such a beautiful workflow friendly paradigm... When I'm explaining how to do something to someone in Windows (as I do often) the first thing I explain to them is "if in doubt right click" and that "if you want to do something to a thing right clicking on that thing will give you a list of all the things you can do to that thing."
This rule of thumb works >95% of the time on Windows but I'd guestimate about only about 75% of the time on Ubuntu and that last 20% happens to encompass a juicy chunk of usability.
There's several places the right click does nothing or is missing options it could and should have. A few of the biggest howlers are (IMHO!)...
No right-click + properties for the disks in the left pane of Nautilus.
No right-click options at all on files in open/save dialogs except 'show hidden files'. These really have no reason not to be the same as those in Nautilus. I particular there's not even a right-click + open folder so I can't launch nautilus from an open/save dialog, something I used ALL THE TIME in 'that other operating system' :-(
You can't right click at all in nautilus list view or open / save unless the file listing is short enough to leave some free whitespace at the bottom.
Of course you can't just snap your fingers and make this happen overnight but hopefully aiming to make sure all the right-clickable bases are covered in core Ubuntu/Gnome would help persuade third party Linux developers to incorporate more right-click functionality into their apps too.

People might want to change theirs for a number of reasons and I don't see why it shouldn't be offered.

Improve NTFS writing support

Many people use NTFS drives, and Ubuntu shows poor performance dealing with them.
NTFS writes are slow, put my CPU at 80% during the process. Basically, writing a ntfs-formatted USB hard disk makes my system unusable (pentium-m toshiba laptop).
Maybe it's not possible to integrate NTFS driver in Linux kernel, so I suggest optimice it to have a better performance.

Convert Wubi installation to native Ubuntu installation

What about a simple way of converting an Ubuntu Wubi installation in a native Ubuntu installation?
I know people who has installed Ubuntu via Wubi, and know, they want a full-Ubuntu version with in its own filesystem (ext3), because it works better.
I propose an option in the Wubi image to convert the installation to native, with disk partitioner, file moving, and finally erasing Wubi.

Foster the development of a visual (WYSIWYG) open source web editor for Linux

Written by carpex the 2 Dec 08 at 03:55. Category: Programming.

New

Ubuntu and Linux users need a user friendly WYSIWYG web editor that is updated and maintained. As far as I know, there are simply no open source replacements for Dreamweaver, Frontpage or similar software. What we need is a simple yet flexible web editor.
Kompozer and NVU seem defunct and haven't been updated in ages.
Seamonkey is too basic and doesn't handle CSS.
Bluefish, Quanta Plus and others are very good, but they are not WYSIWYG.
Joomla or Drupal are also very good, but these CMS are highly theme-dependent and not suited for all projects.
If you think this software already exists, please let me know!

Rotatin screen should change resolution to fit the screen

i love krandtray - it is really nice software
i tried to rotate screen to left (90 deg) and it worked, but not exactly perfect
before my screen was 1024 x 768 px, after rotating it 90 deg to left, physically it was 768 x 1024 px, and kde had still the same resolution, so i think it is really logical, that it should change resolution as well

klipper is a really great tool, but when i copy an image to clipboard, it shows only "images and other media" i think it should display little previews of clipboard, maybe after hover, maybe not, but i think it would be very nice improvement

I am the type of person who regularly has a ton of stuff open. I would love it if there was some kind of panel preference to disregard the window titles and horizontally compact the window tabs down to simply the program icon, just like the FaviconizeTabs extension in Firefox. I think this would look extremely clean and I would use it even if I didn't need to.

The program 'mc' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install mc
i woud like it be like this:
The program 'svn' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install subversion, do you want to start installing? [Y/n]
and after Y option user should see everything exaclty the same as if he type sudo apt-get install himself
